Lyrics Analysis

Lyrics Analysis

My crown of roses
Is filled with thorns
And the sleeve where my heart is
Is old and worn
I guess the time of my life
Is running late
And I don't know how much longer
I can wait

In this part of the song, the singer is almost contradicting what his is saying by the use of opposites. For example line 1 and 2. At first with ‘a crown of roses’ you feel it is going to be happy and then the next line comes in with “is filled with thorns” making the song sad and telling the audience that there is something is wrong. Plus he is playing with the fact that roses are beautiful but they all have thorns, explaining his situation. This part of the song also shows his hope saying “I guess the time of my life is running late” meaning that he still waiting and still believes that his time to love will arrive, however he is loosing patience saying “I don’t know how much longer I can wait”.

For your phone calls, four walls, at night fall in your bed
So my bruised ears will not hear this one clear thought in my head
When will I be loved?

In this part of the song, he is showing that he is waiting for the girl to either come or come back, because it’s not clear whether if he has been in a relationship previously and is waiting for the girl to come back, or is waiting to be in a relationship. However I am thinking he is thinking of a previous relationship as he is he seems as if he is drawing back from previous moments when he says, “your phone calls, your four walls at night fall in your bed”. Also for the first time we hear the main line in the song ‘When will I be loved’, which shows the guy asking the question. It sounds as if he is asking himself in a confused fashion.

The older I get
The younger I want to be
Why do I fall
So Easily

Here he seems as if he is angry and frustrated with himself when he says, “why do I fall so easily”. And also he realizes that he is running out of time, because he says, “the older I get the younger I want to be”

For your phone calls, four walls, at night fall in your bed
Now my bruised ears can just hear this one clear thought in my head
When will I be loved
When will I be loved

Here we get a repeat of the pre-chorus and chorus. The repetition of it all could mean that he is reflecting back on his previous relationships when saying “for your calls, for your walls at night fall in your bed”. It almost feels as if he blames his old relationships for not working out for the position he is in now – and now all he keeps thinking he “when will I be loved”. Also the repetition of the line really emphasizes the way he feels and it also shows the audience how much he means it.

Let's dance in the dust
Of another one of our days
I hope that tomorrow
I will find a way
I'll find a way

“Lets dance in the dust of one of our days” it seems as if he is thinking back to one of his old relationships. However it sounds as if he is trying to move on after learning from his mistakes and is ready to move on because he says, “I hope that tomorrow I will find a way”. And the way he says at the end of this section “I’ll find a way” proves the fact that he is ready to move on and find love again.

To your phone calls, four walls, at night fall in your bed
Now my bruised ears can just hear this one clear thought in my head
When will I be loved

From the line before this section to the first line of this section it all starts to make sense. As he saying that he will now “find a way” – “’to your’ phone calls, four walls, at night fall in your bed”. This could mean that he has found someone he likes. However the last line still says, “when will I be loved” which still means that he has not found love and is still waiting.
