When Will I Be Loved – Rough Edit 1 Pros and Cons

When Will I Be Loved – Rough Edit 1 Pros and Cons

I think the camera work is done well. For example in the majority of the video the shots are held in a steady position when appropriate. For example in the beginning of the video when Ally is playing the guitar, the shot is held steady and zoomed in close to his hands to show the appropriate shots.

With regards to the framing of the shot, I think we did very well. All of the shots seem appropriate with the right amount of detail in them. Also alongside trying to capture what is needed, we also tried to exclude some of the objects in the shot. For example when we were filming in the park area, we had to deal with excluding litterbins and part of the park that were not aesthetically pleasing. So we had to manipulate the camera angles to make sure we get the scenes we wanted to capture.

We used a variety of shot distances. For example there are some close up scenes of Ally playing the guitar, and when he is lip syncing with the projector behind him. Also, we have used long shots too, when ally is walking out of his house and along the road. High angle shots have also been used when Ally is walking towards the bus stop. Mid shots are used when Shannon and Ally are walking in the park (as flashbacks) to keep the video interesting and make it

The mise en scene of the rough cut was good, however in parts could have been better. The clothes wore by the people in the video were suitable. They weren’t too colourful, but enough to make them seem normal. Also the clothes worn suit the style and genre of the music and the lyrics too. The way that nothing is too extravagant makes the video seem normal, and allows the audience to relate to it and put the focus on the characters feelings and the music too.

Editing on the rough cut was okay but nowhere near the quality that it needed to be. For example the syncing at the beginning of the video when Ally is playing the guitar is out of sync at times, because the video has been slowed down to much. Also I think the post production of using the stabalisation tool was not used enough to stop scenes looking too jolty, whereas if we had used it more, a lot of the scenes would have seemed smoother and a of a higher quality. Also some of the syncing where Ally was alone lip-syncing in the lecture theatre some of it was out of time and some parts needed to either be sped up or slowed down for it to fit with the audio.

In addition, one of the things that was missing from the rough cut was the scene of rejection by Shannon when she rejects a phone call from Ally after the scene where he tries to call her. This is a really important scene that makes the visuals link in with the audio and also makes the video make sense. At the moment watching this, it is still un-clear what the relationship is like between the two people. This is also causes further confusion because we get flashbacks of the happy couple – but that is not contrasted by anything but the solo shots of Ally singing alone. The only was we could distinguish that Ally is upset and left alone is by listening to the lyrics. Also at the beginning of the video, parts of it seems a little boring. When Ally is walking to the bus stop and in some parts of the flashbacks the video seems slow and drags a little bit.

In the newer version, we will have to re-film some parts and possibly film new parts to make the video make sense and fit better with the lyrics and the music too. For example a shot of Shannon really making the rejection in the video clear will have to be put in to make the video make sense and make our purpose clear.
